diary

Today we were doing the practical assignment production for studio basic operation.

Firstly in the morning the tutor gave more time to students who have not finished they the paperwork for assignment and we were told that we would start our practical assignment production after a lunch break.

In today lesson we didn't have to set up all equipment’s because Josh Lloyd set up all the equipment’s one-day before and only things we have to do is to check everything to be sure they work.

However during the rehearsal again we faced the same problem as we faced last week of the camera that it wasn’t working properly we had to go through all the same work as we were being through last week, however after took long time till Abid and Ricardo with help of Peter sort the problem.

Moreover during fixing the camera problem they changed the composite wire few times but they couldn't sort the problem until they decided to change the composite wire to component wire, after working hard to fix that, problem finally they sorted the problem.

After camera being fixed the 1st group left from last week start their rehearsal, after doing one rehearsal the group decided to take the main shot. I was in charge of sound mixer, during the rehearsal I checked the sound mixer and all microphones I faced a small problem but after Nabeel and me worked together we sort the problem out. The problem faced during the rehearsal I had 2 microphones connected to one channel, but as I said in above with the Nabeel help we sort the problem and it went very well.

However after 1st group finished their practical assignment production it was my group time to start our practical assignment.

However in my group I was in charge of the vision mixer and we start doing our practical assignment, during the 1st rehearsal I faced a small problem again and the problem was, when from live show I cut to the VT both of my VT and ending title played at the same time so therefore I asked Ricardo and again with the Ricardo help I sort the problem again.

After one rehearsal we decided to go for the take and we succeed. However in my view I think we had very good communication skills together as a group all today, and I think the communication skills are improved and it was better than last week.

There are some photographs that I took today and I would like to share here.

Assignment

Introduction
This assignment will involve descriptions of a variety of different studio roles, played within the film industry along with this it will consist of my most preferred studio role as a future career. This assignment will also draft a map of my actual skills and aptitude of the desired skills. Moreover, it will conclude with an action plan of the preferred job role in the future.
There are several roles played within the film industry these are listed below along with the brief description of each role.
Lighting Operator
This role is an important role when working in the film environment, this is because lighting is mostly used to give the best quality of the moving image and it also helps the other studio roles for example the camera operator to perform their job efficiently as when there is no lighting involved there is no good quality of image. In addition when more than one camera is in use at filming the lighting must appear at the same time.
Editor
This role is a group of people who makes changes to the video have been filmed by videographer also deals with results of the video and make graphic to it. Editor also take responsibility’s of truth of the video has been filmed by cameraman. Also have to be sure for the quality of the announced factual through peer review own comments, and editing. An editor must have very suitable skills, also have time to create and change sometimes badly written. (JMIR)
Sited in the next step web stated…
“As an editor, you would be part of a 'post-production’ team that joins together raw material recorded by the camera and sound crews and adds any extra sound effects, graphics and special effects. You could work on projects from feature films and TV programmes to corporate videos, commercials and music videos” (Next step, 2010)
Producer
This role is always including in the filming business. Also they role are the most important key role in the filming. They are always in charge of managing the crew team e.g. director, floor manager. Moreover the news producer has different duties such as.
* Make sure everything is been organized before start filming.
* Given order to other crew team.
* Making sure that everyone is on time such as. Director, camera operator, lighting, reporter, sound mixer, and interviewee.
* Also the producer is responsible to read the script and make things right if there is anything wrong.
So therefore the most important role is the producer in the film industry.
Sited in the next step web stated…
“You could work your way up through the industry in various ways. In TV, you could start as a runner or production assistant. Producers of factual programmes often start as programme researchers or journalists. Alternatively, you could progress through production office roles, from production secretary to assistant production coordinator and beyond” (Next step, 2010)
Camera operator
One of the most desired job roles that I would like to take up in the future is camera operator.
The cameraman musts know everything about the camera. It earn a lot of abilities to know all article of a camera and how to use the item manually such as zooming, menu, focus, white balance, etc. Its important to know how to set the camera up especially to get good shots when the director order to do so.
This job role has a major parts played in the film business. The main job role fore a camera operator is to take shots form different angles. Also they have priority in changing positions of the roles in the studio to give the best shots for the films. A camera operator also provides knowledge to enable the producer, director, the vision mixer, and editor to build a story visually. A camera operator is working closely with director, actor, also work with other crewmember to get the productive shots. As a camera operator’s key role is to set up all the equipment’s that also include the lighting, tripod, cables, also to choose right lenses and filters. The communication with director and the camera operator is should be always strong to fix the problems and to make the films run smoothly.
The camera man work on his own initiative how ever working with the instruction of the director doesn't mean that your not only a camera operator but have different part of the roles as well. (Alden.C, 2005)
Sited in the Startin TV web site it stated...
"Ability to frame and compose shots and perform camera moves with precision and speed; in-depth knowledge of the principles of camera work; good IT Skills; knowledge of the relevant electronics; excellent communication, interpersonal and diplomatic skills; good colour vision, and excellent hand-to-eye co-ordination; physical stamina for working long hours and moving heavy equipment; knowledge of the requirements of the relevant Health and Safety legislation and procedures"(StartinTV, 2011)
The skills and knowledge to become the professional camera operator are.
* Good practical skills and understanding the importance of the roles
* Efficient colour vision
* The ability to follow instruction with fine detail
* Ability to accumulate creativity with technical skills
* Good level of strength for maneuvering camera equipment’s
During my practice as a camera operator I gained a lot of knowledge and skills in different aptitudes.
These skills include the way and how the camera is used.
Firstly one skill the I put in to the camera role is the way I handle the camera to prevent from shaking as both hand is used. When using the camera there are a variety of aspects in getting different shots and also different effects, Such as
Using white balance
* Checking sound
* Zoom in /Zoom out
* Mid shot
* Close up
* Long shot
* Extreme close up
* Wide shot
* Full shot
In addition I know how to use the cameras menu to select appropriate of setting such as choosing a type of Frame, Gain, Iris, Color bar, Altering the brightness and checking the
sound/audio system (Always make sure the sound/audio is not on mute).
Working within the film industry I have gained other skills such as.
* Communication skill-this is a very important skill used to ensure all information is done the right way.
* Listening skill-is a major part in the film industry to allow all messages come across everyone in an appropriate way.
* Team work skill-working together to get the job done correctly.
The skills I will need to put in to the jobs are:
* Effective creativity skills
* Knowledge of the health & safety policy
* Good use of visual composition
* Create the ability to use both technical and creativity skills
* Most have good composition of the movement of images. (Skillset)
Action plan
As I am currently studying broadcasting & TV it has and will enable me to gain all the relevant knowledge and experiences to put it in to the job role that I will do in the future. During my time studying it has given me lot of experience on how to use the camera and how to set up all the equipment’s to perform the filming. Alternatively this course has also given me understanding of other job roles such as.
* Vision mice
* Director
* Sound mixer
* Floor manager
These roles are different to each other however they all work together as a team this is because team work skills is a vital skills to have in the film industry.
In between my studies I hope to take up lot of work experience to expand on my practical skills and knowledge so therefore I would work in a studio or outside broadcast. In addition in completion of my studies I will look for a job that suits my qualification.

In conclusion, it has been seen that each of the roles within the film business have mixture of parts played along with this, each job are different to each other. In respect to the studio roles like Vision Mixing, Floor Planning, Camera Operator etc., Producer and Director have the most strength in this job in filming due to the instructions, which must be given to them for the shooting of the film to be accurate. However apart from the Producer and the Director being the most important, the chosen job role that I chose has a very major part in this profession as a Camera Operator too, this is due to the film development of the shot taken, thus to produce a smooth finish for the outcome of the film. The limitation of becoming a Camera Operator is far more less than any other job roles within the film business as they have a greater knowledge of other job roles in the studio along with outside broadcast. One limitation for a Camera Operator is they must take extra care in the equipment that is set up due to the health and safety regulations. Conversely, The Producer, Director, Editor, Camera Operator, vision mixer and floor planner all work as a team, ensuring that everything goes as plan to avoid any mistakes. Therefore joining in to this career of filming it has an advantage of gaining very good team working skills as each role support each other with any problems faced during the due course.

Research portfolio

For my research on my portfolio I watched (the Graham Norton show) interviewing Madonna. I counted how many cameras were in use on this show and where the cameras have been set up, I found out that in this show 6 cameras were used. There were some cameras taking different shots. Firstly I thought it could be more cameras in use but after I watched the interview back few times and I noticed its only 6 cameras that were being used. The first shot that was taken was a long shot and then it went to mid shot to wide shot back to mid shot and then back to long shot. Also I noticed that were some shots that changed very quickly and it didn't take longer then 5 second to change.

 I created the above floor plan for Graham Norton show that’s shows the all cameras angles and also presenter with chair & the guest additionally with the couch, the table in front of them and the studio audience. I included all the cameras which were used for this show and I notice that there were 6 cameras in use, 3 of them on the dolly but with no movement in left side, also 2 cameras in the right side, Inaddition there is a camera in the left corner attached to the studio ceiling that shows the full studio with the audience. As I watched this video quite few times I noticed that all the shots are steady shots that were taken.

diary

Today we were doing the practical assignment production for studio basic operation.
Firstly in the morning we took all the equipment’s out of the van and start setting up for our practical production.
After setting up all the equipment’s such as.
Tricaster, vision mixer, cameras etc.
Each group were given their time of filming and the first group start doing rehearsal. During the rehearsal we faced the problem with one of them 3 cameras we set, so we start working on the problem as a group but we couldn’t sort the problem out, however we decided to start rehearsal and main take with 2 cameras. For first group I was in charge of the camera, during the rehearsal and main take I did not see a good communication between the group members that I was doing a camera role for their group. Also because of shortage camera it was hard to do the job properly.
However after the first group done their job we went for a break.
After the break Abid and Ricardo fixed the camera, as they were not working.
However after break second group were ready to start rehearsal and main take but before start the rehearsal this time 2 cameras went off, so this time took quite long time to fix the cameras and we went through a lot and changed the composite wires few times finally we fixed the cameras. However the second group took long time till they decided they are ready for the main take after few times rehearsal, I were in charge of camera again for the second group.
After second group finished their job the third group start rehearsal and main take, in this group I didn’t had any role so I were doing my paper work.
However the third group finish quite late and because of that we did not had time to go through to the next act so therefor we were told by tutor that we will do our production assignment on Monday.
The group left for Monday is 2 group my group and another group is the group (Josh) directing.

Knowing risks
There were quite few risks in the time and tutor told us as well that we have to beware of them wires on the floor and all kits around, so we cleared the floor after word and then start filming.
I took some photos and I would like to share here.

Live multi camera OB filming band production day

Today we went Lever Street, Manchester College, the Centre for music for 2nd week in a row.

Firstly in the morning as a group we all took kits out of the van and we all start setting up the equipment’s such as. Camera, sound mixer, tricaster, Talk back etc. which took about (one half hour).

After sitting up all equipment’s as a group we decided to give the each individual roles for the 1st 4 acts. After we were given our roles for the 1st 4 acts we found out that there will be 3 more acts to perform for today show so we all decided to give the roles to students who did not have enough roles to do.

After all students have their job roles and responsibilities we all start checking the cameras, tricaster, talk back, etc. To make sure everything is working before we start the live show.

However before we started the live show we faced few problems and the problem where the tricaster that wasn't connected but after Mr Colin checked and opened the tricaster we found the electric cable wasn't in place also after fixing the problem with the help of Mr Colin we start setting up our tricaster and vision mixer then we start to setting up the cameras white balance but we faced another problem that we couldn't set up the white balance due to the lights after hard work with help of Mr Peter finally we got the colour we wanted. After doing this we all went for our lunch break.

After we came back from our lunch break we did the new white balance and put the new setting for the cameras due to the new light system has been set. After fixing all the problems we were ready to record the performer, but when we start recording the show and it was in live on ustream we did have another problem with the communication between director and floor manager. During that time of recording the band wasn't ready to perform and as a vision mixer I had to play graphics few times till the band were ready and we start recording. However during the time we were life streaming I had good communication and good listening skills with the director. However I think we did good job and the show went very well and except the 1st part of the show that was the bad communication between the director and floor manager we had a good communication skills of the group and we were happy for our performance.

Knowing risks

During the show for the 1st act I haven't seen any risks because I was in the gallery room and I was in response of the vision mixing. But for the 2nd act I were in the studio I saw few risks again that could make hazards of falling or tripping. However as a group we setup the equipment’s in the beginning of setting up, we all confirmed that all the cables and wires are covered. However this time the cameras wires & lead were all over the floor and it wasn’t covered and mated and it could harm a camera operator while moving around and filming.

To prevent the risks from happening again I will be make sure as soon as I see any risks I will sort it out before it damage or harm someone or make hazard off tripping. Also I will alert the entire group to beware of the risks.

Also I took some photos from today's show that I would like to share here.

In this group I were given a floor manager job role, it was my 1st time ever been in charge of floor managing a found it useful and quite easy and I had a good communication skills with the director and the entire group. There is some photos of the last group I would like to share here.

I would like to give some details about the time we start filming that I have been showing on the tables above when performers intro to the stage, because we had some problem before starting the show and the problem were the lights and also it took time to set up the camera sitting and fixed the problem we had with white balance. Because of that reason couldn't start the same time were given to us by tutor.

In the end of the day we had to film the 4th act again because a last minute I found out that the vision mixer were forgot to click on the live stream and record the show.
So we had to film them again and we succeed.
Overall I think we done a very good job during the show today as a group and I am pleased with what we have done, however I think you had a good communication skills and good group working skills.

4.30pm we start de-rig all equipment’s
